Understanding Body Dysmorphia

Updated: Nov 9, 2023

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a mental health condition characterized by a distorted perception of one's appearance. It is a complex mental health challenge that is difficult to solve by sheer willpower or a changing of mindset alone. Individuals with BDD are preoccupied with perceived appearance flaws, often fixating on minor imperfections that others may not even notice. The preoccupation with the perceived flaws can consume their thoughts, causing severe distress and affecting their daily functioning and relationships.

The causes of BDD vary and include genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Traumatic experiences or a history of other mental health conditions may also contribute to the onset of BDD. Social and environment may increase the vulnerability to BDD. The history of being subjected to intense teasing or bullying related to physical appearance, societal pressures to meet unrealistic beauty standards, or excessive exposure to media which promote an idealized definition of beauty may worsen the individuals with BBD perception of the defects.

While the exact triggers of BDD may vary from person to person, it's essential to recognize that BDD is not a result of personal failure or a lack of willpower. It is a mental health challenge that requires professional intervention.

Psychotherapy is one of the effective treatments for BDD. Popular therapeutic approaches include CBT and EMDR. As BDD is a complex condition, individuals with BDD may benefit from treatment that integrates several therapeutic modalities to support their recovery.

Seeking professional help is an essential step in managing BDD. The earlier treatment begins, the better the chances of managing the condition effectively.
