PTSD Therapy

PTSD Counselling and therapy

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder triggered after a deeply threatening or scary event. The shock of what happened can be so great that it causes people with PTSD to live in constant hypervigilant, fear, anxiety and sadness.

Symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks, nightmares and insomnia. People with PTSD also experience intense painful or unpleasant emotions and intrusive reliving of the event throughout the day. Some people with PTSD experience loss of memory of the traumatic event. However, when they encounter a disturbing situation, the trauma is triggered, leading to PTSD.

Dealing with PTSD is challenging, and the intrusive thoughts in the form of flashbacks and nightmares often cause people with PTSD to feel helpless about living an everyday life and have low self-confidence. People with PTSD related to abuse or family violence often have difficulty trusting people, leading them to have poor or rigid boundaries and constant hypervigilant about being subjected to trauma again.

PTSD Treatment

Treatment for PTSD generally focus on three main goals:

•    Reduced PTSD symptoms

•    Skills to deal with PTSD

•    Restore self-esteem and confidence

Counselling modalities such as CBT and exposure therapy have been a popular treatments for PTSD for many years. However, in recent years, psychologists and trauma experts have discovered that PTSD stays in the part of the brain that counselling or talk therapy cannot access. Since then, there has been the emergence of trauma therapy such as EMDR, Brainspotting and Somatic Experiencing. This therapy accesses and processes the parts of the brain or body which store the trauma material causing  PTSD, leading to healing and rediscovery of the confident self.
