Multichannel Eye Movement Integration (MEMI)

About MEMI

Multichannel Eye Movement Integration (MEMI) is an innovative and trauma-informed approach designed to help people address trauma and emotional distress. It was developed by combining ideas from Eye Movement Integration (EMI) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). MEMI works with multiple channels of the mind and body—including our senses, brain, and nervous system—to help individuals feel calmer and more grounded.

In simple terms, MEMI helps people work through traumatic or stressful experiences by gently guiding the brain to process them differently.

This method may be helpful for people dealing with:

● Traumatic experiences

● PTSD or complex PTSD (CPTSD)

● Phobias

● Addictions

● Anxiety or other emotional challenges

MEMI is grounded on the premise that our experiences, memories, emotions, and reactions are all organised in a structured way by the brain. It is experienced through our senses—what we see, hear, feel, and more. MEMI uses specific eye movements to connect with these memory systems. During a MEMI session, the MEMI therapist guides the client to follow four sets of eye movements while thinking about their traumatic event. The aim is to reorganise traumatic experiences in beneficial ways. Specifically, the amygdala, a part of the brain that signals the presence of danger, might also decrease in baseline activity after this process. After a MEMI session, individuals usually feel calmer when they recall the traumatic experience.

How MEMI Works

MEMI sessions involve guided eye movements, calming sensory techniques, and verbal prompts from a trained therapist. The person focuses on a distressing memory or feeling silently (without needing to speak it aloud), while the therapist leads them through a series of eye movement patterns. These movements aim to "activate" the different parts of the brain and nervous system.

By engaging the senses—like sight, sound, and body awareness—MEMI helps the brain reprocess upsetting memories in a more balanced, less stressful way.
