Somatic Therapy

SOMATIC THERAPY

Somatic Therapy is a body-oriented approach designed to release traumatic shock and resolve patterns that become trapped in the nervous system. It is commonly used to support healing from PTSD, complex trauma, and attachment-related wounds. This can help identify where a person may be stuck in survival responses such as fight, flight, or freeze, while offering practical clinical tools to restore regulation and flexibility within the nervous system.

How It Helps

Somatic Therapy focuses on resolving the effects of stress, trauma, and shock stored within the body and nervous system. From an Somatic Experiencing perspective, trauma is understood through its impact on nervous system regulation and how this dysregulation shapes emotions, behaviours, and physical wellbeing. When individuals become stuck in chronic patterns of fight, flight, or freeze, somatic therapy works to support release, recovery, and increased resilience. As a body-based approach, it is applied across many professional and clinical settings.

Somatic therapy can be especially beneficial for individuals experiencing physical symptoms linked to trauma, chronic stress, or emotional distress. It is often helpful for people who feel that traditional talk therapy alone has not fully addressed their experiences, as it works directly with bodily awareness, stored tension, chronic pain, and nervous system dysregulation.

Who May Benefit Most:

  • Individuals healing from trauma, PTSD, complex trauma, or dissociation who wish to better regulate how their nervous system responds to stress, triggers, and feelings of threat.

  • People experiencing ongoing stress, anxiety, panic symptoms, or persistent physical tension such as jaw clenching, muscle tightness, restlessness, or difficulty relaxing.

  • Individuals living with chronic pain, fatigue, or other body-based concerns that may be connected to stress or nervous system dysregulation.

  • People who feel emotionally or physically “stuck”

  • Those frequently caught in survival responses such as fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown, and who want to build greater resilience, regulation, and a sense of safety within their bodies.
