Choice Theory & Reality Therapy
ABOUT Choice Theory / Reality Therapy (CTRT)
The premise of choice theory is that every individual only has the power to control themselves. Choice Theory advocates that people take responsibility for their own lives and recognise their limitations in trying to direct other people's decisions and lives.
The Choice Theory counsellor empowers individuals to take responsibility for their choices by teaching them to make choices that align with their values and goals. The choice theory counsellor will also guide the individuals to explore the way their behaviours conflict with their quest to meet their quality world, which fulfils the five basic human needs:

-
Survival and safety
-
Love and belonging
-
Power (or Achievement)
-
Freedom
-
Fun

The key empowering principle of Choice Theory emphasises on the shift from external control to internal control. The guiding principles of Choice Theory include:
-
The only person we can control is ourselves. We can give others information, but we cannot control them. Attempting to control others can lead to stress, tension and frustration.
-
The past experiences can contribute heavily to how we act today. However, what is more important is that we focus on our current state and improve the choices we make.
-
Choice Theory helps us focus on making better conscious choices to achieve our goals. Choice Theory emphasises on the importance of internal control, the belief that we are responsible for our own actions and consequences and not attributing all experiences to pure luck or external circumstances.

As individuals gradually take ownership of their decision-making, their behaviours and thoughts will indirectly reduce the painful emotional and physiological responses, leading to a better and more satisfying relationship with themselves and others.
The choice theory will benefit individuals and couples who wish to work on their current relationship and mental health challenges.
