Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

ABOUT COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has been an effective intervention in helping individuals overcome
a range of psychological issues, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders and various mental health
conditions. CBT is backed up by scientific research and is clinically significant, with evidence suggesting
significant improvement in functioning and quality of life with the use of CBT.

The core tenets of CBT include:

  1. Psychological problems often derive from cognitive distortion and unhelpful ways of thinking.

  2. Patterns of unhelpful behaviour lead to psychological issues.

  3. Learning better coping methods can significantly reduce psychological problems, leading to a better quality of life.

CBT treatment usually involves cognitive restructuring or change of thinking patterns. These strategies might include:

  • Identifying one's distortions in thinking and reevaluating them in light of reality.

  • Gaining a different perspective of self and other's behaviour and motivation.

  • Using problem-solving skills to cope with challenging situations, which leads to increase in self-confidence

In sessions, the therapist may collaborate with the client and help them understand thought and behavioural patterns that may – for example, lead to a fear of social situations or avoidant behaviour. Through a gradual process of thought and behavioural change both in and outside of sessions, individuals may learn new ways of thinking to cope with difficult situations, and this ultimately improves their functioning in everyday life.
