Assault Trauma

Anchor 1

WHAT IS Assault Trauma?

Assault is an act of causing physical harm to someone else that may or may not result in serious injuries. It can include beating, throwing objects or threatening someone else with significant damage. Assaults is an offence.

Survivors of assaults often suffer from fears, resulting in difficulty sleeping and focusing on tasks. While some may recover after a period of rest, others may suffer from post-traumatic stress. Some signs that a person may be dealing with post-traumatic stress include:

  • Experiencing flashbacks and nightmares about the assault

  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating

  • Intense anger

  • Sense of helplessness and self-blame

Emotional scars from the assaults may impact a relationship with others, perceptions of self-worth or capability to regulate emotions and behaviours. It could also lead to depression or anxiety disorders.
