Attachment Trauma

Our interpersonal relationships are often motivated by our experience with our caregivers. People who experience enough support, trust, and love can regulate emotions appropriately and are more well-equipped to respond appropriately to stressors. They also tend to grow up feeling more assured of themselves and thus are more secure in their relationships. Likewise, people whose caregivers are ambivalent, absent, emotionally neglectful or abusive often grow up feeling insecure about themselves. They find it harder to connect to their emotions or manage it. Such attachment trauma often impacts adulthood and our relationships with others.

Various therapies help survivors of attachment trauma reclaim their confidence and help them to build better intrapersonal and interpersonal relations. Psychodynamic, Emotion Focus Therapy (EFT) and Narrative Therapy (NT) are some of the therapies that deal with childhood issues. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a researched validated psychotherapy approach that is effective in helping survivors of attachment trauma. EMDR works on healing the traumatic memory caused by attachment trauma. It heals unprocessed memories of these adverse experiences, which are the foundation for many mental health challenges, including negative views of self and difficulties forming healthy relationships with others.
