What is Psychodynamic Therapy

Developed by Sigmund Freud, Psychodynamic therapy is one of the oldest therapies that proposes how early childhood experiences play a fundamental role in shaping adult personality, behaviour, relationships, and emotions.

Psychodynamic therapy assumes that psychological issues such as anxiety, personality disorders, substance use and depression are a result of early life experiences and unconscious patterns, contributing to the cycle of psychological issues. These patterns may include unhelpful defence mechanisms, such as projection and denial, that shape how an individual responds to difficult situations. Psychodynamic therapy aims to explore these internal feelings and experiences and bring them to consciousness. A key feature of psychodynamic therapy is its emphasis on the client-therapist relationship, where emotions and feelings that emerge may provide useful information for the client. This is also known as transference and countertransference.

There are several distinct features of psychodynamic therapy:
  1. Impact of early childhood experience on the current situation

  2. Defence mechanisms as a way to avoid distressing thoughts and feelings

  3. The tripartite structure: the id, the ego, and the superego

  4. The drive reduction theory of motivation

  5. Exploration of wishes and fantasies

  6. Affect and expression of emotion

  7. Essential of the therapeutic relationship

Psychodynamic therapy has impacted the development of many new therapies that rely on its assumption of early development's impact on adult relationships. It may benefit people facing:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety, including social anxiety

  • Borderline personality disorder

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Emotional difficulties

  • Traumatic experiences

  • Loss of meaning

  • Anyone who is interested in gaining deeper insight into their early experiences or defences

Unlike immediate, symptom-targeted, and behavioural traditions, the psychodynamic approach focuses on deeper emotional experiences that may lead to sustainable change, including a stronger identity and sense of self, improved self-esteem, better coping mechanisms, stronger social relationships, and greater resilience.
