Sexual Trauma

Anchor 1

WHAT IS Sexual trauma?

Sexual trauma includes inappropriate touch, sexual assault or any sexually related act done against a person's will. Sexual trauma is highly traumatic. Survivors of sexual trauma struggle with shock, nightmares and fears of recurring assaults. Survivors of sexual trauma often have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Some may even blame themselves for the assault they suffered.

The sexual trauma survivors often feel alone, ashame and vulnerable. It is worse if the perpetrator is someone they know and trust. The betrayal leads to the sexual trauma survivors growing up feeling lost, insecure, having difficulty trusting others and self-harming. Some sexual trauma survivors may resort to numbing their pain through substance abuse or other unhelpful methods.

Psychotherapy for sexual trauma survivors includes processing the emotion related to the trauma and reducing the intensity of the memories to help the survivors cope with their daily living. A solid therapeutic alliance by the caring, empathetic, and trauma-informed therapist is critical to support the sexual trauma survivors in their healing journey.
