Building A Healthy Self-Esteem

Self-esteem is a person's confidence in their ability or worth. People with healthy self-esteem feel more comfortable with their self-image and are more self-forgiving. In contrast, people with low self-esteem feel more negative and critical of themselves. They often have difficulty processing their emotions.

Learning to understand the root cause of low self-esteem is helpful. It helps you identify triggers and deal with the root cause of low self-esteem. It is beneficial to process your fear of hypothetical scenarios and the sense of not being good enough with a professional counsellor.

Other helpful techniques that may help you deal with low self-esteem include:

  • Stop comparing yourself with the people around you. Practicing "thought stopping" or "letting it pass" when you realise that you are comparing yourself frequently.

  • Look at the alternative story or a sparkling moment. You may be struggling with many life challenges, but there were times when you did well or achieved something that you wanted despite those challenges.

  • Good social support is essential. Try spending more time with your people who are supportive and encouraging. Please do not avoid gatherings and lunch with colleagues/schoolmates because you feel you are not good enough as them.

  • Forgiving and encouraging yourself. Self-criticism leads to low self-confidence.
