Overcome the setback of fail resolutions and goals

The beginning of the year is often the time when people resolve and plan things they hope to achieve by the end of the year. It is also the time when some people realize that they did not fulfil the goals that they had made in the previous year.

There are many reasons why people don’t stick to their goals, It can be because of busyness, lack of interest, not motivated or perhaps fear. Fear of making change and fear of what that change may bring. Change, even positive change, can bring anxiety. Anxiety then leads to fear.

For example, you may be thinking of a career change and plan to take up new skills to prepare for the career switch. While you are excited about the possibility of making that move towards your goal, you are also anxious about the challenges ahead. The more you think of it, the more anxious you. If the anxiety is super high, it will do all it can to prevent you from making that move, by giving reasons to keep you procrastinating.

People who experienced bullying, harsh criticism and lack of affirmation during their childhood, often grow up feeling anxious about making a mistake. Unconsciously, they carry the sense of “I am not good enough”. So, they are afraid of making changes because they believe they will fail, thus will be subjected to the shameful experience. To avoid pain, they remain where they are, even if it is causing them to be unhappy.

This internal split can be resolved through counselling and psychotherapy. I have been privileged to journey with people who eventually overcome the false belief of being “not good enough” and seeing them taking the steps towards reaching their full potential.

If you have observed that you keep making plans, but have not fulfilled them, perhaps you might want to reflect on what is the cause, what is the underlying reason for you not to be able to accomplish your goal. You might want to consider talking to people whom you trust or even processing it with a professional counsellor and therapist.

Perhaps 2020 is the time for you to take that step towards fulfilling your New Year Resolution and achieving your goals.
