Have you ever found yourself in a situation when you feel so anxious that you feel numb and have intense headaches, stomach aches or nausea? Or have you been in a case when you are about to sit for that important exam or participate in a sporting event or performance that you have been practising so hard for, but the anxiety was so intense you couldn't perform up to your standard?
The above are some examples of somatic symptoms related to anxiety. It is usual for us to be anxious during critical events. However, when the stress is so intense and hinders our capacity to perform to the best of our ability, there is more than feeling anxious. Severe anxiety is a sign of unprocessed traumatic memories which freeze or get stuck when we encounter traumatic events. The "freeze" traumatic memories are hidden in the unconscious but continue to trigger anxiety and even panic attacks when faced with similar situations.
One of the effective psychotherapy for anxiety is Brainspotting. Founded by David Grand in 2003, Brainspotting is one of the fastest-growing psychotherapy treatments for anxiety. Brainspotting differs from the traditional therapy model because talk therapy works on the frontal cortex, which contains reasoning, decision making and cognitive behaviour. On the other hand, Brainspotting accesses the sub-cortex or the “difficult-to-access” area of the brain, which stores specific painful, uncomfortable emotions or thoughts caused by trauma. This area is called the brainspot. Brainspotting practitioners help you identify and unlock the brainspots, so the memory or memories become less painful, thus reducing the associated emotions and thoughts, which trigger anxiety.
Brainspotting is an effective psychotherapy intervention for various mental health challenges, including performance anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD.
